Nervous System Regulation

The mechanism preceding stress and emotion.

01

Why does everything begin in the nervous system?

Every stress reaction begins in the nervous system. Before an emotion appears, before a thought forms, before you name something a problem — the body is already setting itself regulatorily. The nervous system reacts faster than consciousness. This early regulation determines whether tension will end or become chronic.

02

What is stress regulation in biological terms?

Stress regulation is a biological process of maintaining balance — homeostasis and allostasis — in response to a stimulus. The stimulus can be a work situation, a conversation, responsibility, judgment or time pressure. The body analyses the significance and triggers mobilisation accordingly: changes in breathing, muscle tension, increased alertness, and sometimes freezing. This is a natural adaptive response — not a disorder.

03

Chronic stress and regulatory cost

The problem lies not in the reaction itself, but in its lack of closure. If tension repeats daily in the same areas — jaw, neck, shoulders, abdomen — a chronic regulatory cost begins to accumulate. The body maintains a readiness that should biologically end. Over time, tension stops being noticeable and becomes the background of everyday functioning.

04

Hierarchical organisation of reactions

The nervous system operates hierarchically. First, structures responsible for biological safety activate — cognitive analysis comes later. That is why we often experience situations where the body reacts faster than thought. This hierarchy explains why the body responds faster than narrative.

05

Dynamic Regulatory Support Point

DPPR

In the PRZED CHWILĄ model, DPPR represents the current point of regulation. It is a place — in the body or outside it — where the organism temporarily stabilises tension to maintain continuity of functioning. It can be the jaw, breathing, abdomen, shoulder tension, a specific relationship, task or role.

Observing DPPR allows you to see the moment when a reaction has not yet been established.

Model boundaries

PRZED CHWILĄ does not replace therapy or treatment. It is not a relaxation technique. It is an observational framework for tension regulation based on nervous system biology.
